This is the first step-by-step tutorial video that I have made on how to teach your dog to scratch your back.
Put a treat/a few treats under a container. Make sure your dog sees the treat/treats and use your dog’s favourite treats in order to get the best results.
Be patient and wait for your dog to scratch the container. Click and treat immediately after your dog scratches the container.
Wait for your dog to scratch the container a few times before you click and treat.
Add in a verbal cue and a hand signal just before your dog is going to scratch the container to cue him/her. Click and treat immediately when your dog follows your cue.
Use a piece of paper instead of a container. Repeat steps 1-4 if necessary.
Place the piece of paper on your back and ask your dog to scratch it. Click and treat immediately after your dog scratches the paper on your back.
Finally, cue your dog to scratch your back without using the paper. Click and treat immediately after he/she does it.
